Put the venue in the location field
When a sports, school or club feed puts the address in the description, copy the description into the copy's location, on any plan.
Last updated
Open What copies look like in your sync, set the Location row to Custom, and insert the Description variable. Each copy then gets the original event's description as its location. This works on every plan.
It's for feeds where the address sits in the description and the location field is empty, which is common with sports fixtures, school calendars and club schedules. The copy arrives with no place on it. Pointing its location at the description fixes that without touching the original.
How to set it up
- Open the sync and go to What copies look like.
- On the Location row, pick Custom. A panel titled Location opens, with Always at the top of the rules.
- In the result box, choose Insert variable and pick Description from the Event group. It appears as a chip.
- At the top of the panel, Example event lets you pick one of your calendar's next events. Check Result: it shows what the copy's location will be.
- Save the sync, or start it if it's new.
Until you edit it, Custom changes nothing: it starts out doing exactly what Copy did. The change takes effect when you put the Description chip in the box.
The original event isn't changed. If you also want the description on the copy, leave the Description row on Copy; the two rows are set separately.
What ends up in the location
- The description as plain text. HTML tags are removed and line breaks are kept.
- If the original has no description, the copy's location is empty. An empty result clears the copied field.
The 255-character limit
This suits short addresses. A location can hold 255 characters, and a long description won't fit. SYNCDATE doesn't cut it down: that one event isn't copied, and the sync's detail page shows it under Issues as Location could not be applied, with an Edit Custom settings button. Every other event keeps syncing. The issue clears by itself once that event is written, for example after you shorten its description.
The N / 255 counter under Result turns red when the example is over the limit, so test with your longest event before you rely on it.
If only some events have the address in the description, on Plus a rule can use it only when the location is empty: add a rule with the check Location, is empty, set its result to the Description variable, and set Otherwise to the Location variable. That keeps real locations where they exist. Rules are explained on the Custom text and rules page.
Known limitations
- Location only takes 255 characters. See above: a longer result means that event isn't copied.
- Descriptions with several lines of text, links or agenda items make poor locations. Use this for feeds where the description is the address.
- It applies to every event in the sync. Without a rule, an event that already has a proper location also gets its description in the location field.
