SYNCDATE Docs

Use the description as the location when it is empty

Start with this recipe

When a feed puts the address in the description and leaves Location empty, the copy gets the description as its location. Needs Plus.

Last updated

When an event has no location, its description fills the location of the copy. Events that have a location keep it.

Works on: Plus.

When this is for you

A club's feed puts the address in the description and leaves Location empty, so nothing opens in Maps.

Before you turn it on

  • A location holds at most 255 characters. An event with a longer description is reported as an issue and its copy is not written.
  • Line breaks in the description come along, and an empty description gives an empty location.

How it works

SYNCDATE copies each event to the calendar you check. A rule on the Location row looks at the original location: when it is empty, the copy's location is the description, and when it is filled in, the copy keeps it. For a version without a rule that works on every plan, see the related guide.

What you'll pick

  • The calendar or feed with the venue in the description (1 calendar; copies come from here): Nothing is written to it.
  • The calendar you check (1 calendar; copies land here): Where the copies appear.

Setting it up

  1. Pick the calendar or feed with the venue in the description as the source. Nothing is written to it.
  2. Pick the calendar you check. The copies appear here.
  3. Under "What copies look like", open the "Location" row. It is already set to "Custom" with one rule: if "Location" is empty, use the "Description" variable. "Otherwise" is the "Location" variable.
  4. Check it worked: open the copy of an event that had no location. Its location should be the original description. An event that had a location should keep it.

Variations

You can add these to this sync at any time, without starting over.

Sync everything except all-day events

Add an "All-day events" exclude rule and holidays, birthdays and travel banners stay out of the calendar you sync into. It also catches birthdays from a subscribed calendar, which "Special dates from contacts" cannot — those arrive as ordinary events, so only the all-day rule sees them.

Only invitations you've accepted

Set "Invitations" to "Only yes" and meeting requests you haven't answered stay out of the calendar you sync into until you accept them.

Set this up

Start with this recipe opens the sync screen with this recipe's direction and common settings already filled in. You pick the calendars, and you can change any setting before anything syncs.

The rule is already written. Open the row it names under "What copies look like" to read it or change it before you start the sync.
