Why a Team rule limits my sync
If a choice on your sync is turned off, or a sync is paused, with a message about your Team, here is what each message means and what you can do.
Last updated
A choice is turned off, or a sync is paused, because the owner of your Team set a rule for it. It isn't a fault, and you can't change the rule yourself. Pick one of the choices that are still on, or ask the Team owner to change the rule. Team sync rules are an early-access feature that a Team owner asks for, so you only see these messages if your Team has them.
The rules apply to your syncs while you belong to the Team. The Team owner can see that rules apply and how far they have been applied, but never your event contents.
What each message means
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A choice is greyed out: "Your Team doesn't allow this choice." | The rule for this copy doesn't include that option. | Pick one of the choices that are on. |
| "Your Team only allows some of these choices. The others are turned off." | The owner limited the list for this setting. | Choose from the ones that are on. |
| "Your Team has set this, so it can't be changed." | The owner fixed this setting to one value. | Nothing. Ask the owner if it should change. |
| "Your Team doesn't allow what was chosen here. Pick one of the choices that are on." | An earlier choice no longer fits the rules. | Pick a choice that is on, then save. |
| "Your Team doesn't allow copying from Work to Client. Remove one of them from this sync, or ask a Team admin." (with your calendars' names) | The rules block copying between those two accounts. | Remove one of the calendars from the sync, or ask the owner. |
| "Your Team's rules for Work and Client don't agree, so this can't be saved. Ask a Team admin." (with your calendars' names) | Two parts of the rules conflict for these calendars. | Ask a Team admin to simplify them. |
| "Your Team has turned off Custom rules." | The owner doesn't allow Custom rules. | Use a fixed choice instead of Custom. |
| A Custom variable marked "not allowed by your Team" | The rule limits the part of the event that variable uses. | Remove that variable from your rule. |
If a Custom rule you saved earlier breaks the Team's rules, it stays saved but switches off, and the copy shows the most private value: the title Busy, no description or location, privacy Private, and free or busy Busy.
If your sync is paused
You see "This sync is paused because it no longer follows your Team's rules." The Team changed its rules, or you joined, and this sync broke them.
- Open the sync and change the settings your Team doesn't allow.
- Save.
- Press Resume.
Resuming is yours to do. SYNCDATE doesn't restart a paused sync on its own.
If you left the Team, you see "This sync was paused when you left the Team." Save a change that follows the rules that apply to you now, then resume it.
If you can't save yet
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Checking your Team's rules" | Wait for it to finish. Save is on hold meanwhile. |
| "We couldn't check your Team's rules just now. You can't save until we can." | Press Try again. |
| "Your Team's rules are still being applied to this sync's existing copies." | Nothing. Copies that already exist are being updated. |
| "Some copies this sync made can't be changed to match your Team's rules, so they stay as they are." | Update or remove those copies by hand, or tell the Team owner. |
What happens if I leave the Team
The sync tells you, in the Team's own choice:
- "If you leave this Team, nothing changes: this sync keeps running with its current settings."
- "If you leave this Team, this sync keeps the settings it has now and is paused. You can resume it yourself afterwards."
- "Your Team chose this: if you leave this Team, this sync is deleted, along with the copies it made on your calendars."
A sync the Team doesn't restrict isn't changed when you leave.
Known limitations
- You see only the rules that apply to you. You can't see all the rules or other members' domains.
- The rule follows the address on your account. It is the address your calendar account reports when it is connected, so connecting a different account can put the same sync under different rules.
