SYNCDATE Docs

Account and connection messages

What each account status, calendar access label and connection error means when you connect Google, Microsoft, iCal or CalDAV, and how to fix it.

Last updated

This page covers three places: the status on an account in Settings, the message shown after you try to connect, and the errors for iCal links and CalDAV. Find the words you saw. In every case, nothing you already synced is deleted by the message itself.

Account status in Settings

Re-authorization needed

The provider stopped accepting SYNCDATE's saved sign-in. It happens after a password change, an admin change, or an expired sign-in. Syncs that use the account pause until you fix it, and you get an email naming the account.

What to do: press Reconnect (or Re-authorize) and sign in again. Allow every permission it asks for. See what SYNCDATE decides on its own.

Calendar access missing

You signed in without giving Calendar permission, so SYNCDATE can't see any calendars. The banner says either "Calendar access wasn't allowed for this account." or "We can't see any calendars on this account. Most often this means the Calendar permission wasn't granted when you signed in."

What to do: press Reconnect and tick the Calendar box on the permission screen.

SYNCDATE lost access to this account

The reason isn't known. The banner says "We can't see any calendars on this account. Reconnecting may fix this." Press Reconnect.

Revoked

Access was removed at the provider. Reconnect to give it back, or disconnect the account if you don't want it connected.

No longer exists — remove

The provider says the account was deleted. Reconnecting can't bring it back. Remove the account from SYNCDATE. Syncs that used it stay paused. See Paused — account no longer valid.

Microsoft access was revoked by your administrator

The banner reads "Your organization's admin blocked SYNCDATE for this account. Changes won't cross over until it is approved." There is no Reconnect button because reconnecting won't restore it. Your admin needs to approve SYNCDATE first. Until then changes on either calendar won't cross over, so double-booking is possible. See my workspace admin blocked SYNCDATE.

Account connected

Everything is fine. Nothing to do.

Calendar access labels

These sit beside an account's calendars in Settings. Choose Change permissions to fix any of them.

No calendar access

The account is connected without calendar access, or access wasn't granted. Choose Change permissions and enable calendar access to show calendars.

Calendar access unknown

Permission details aren't available for this account. Choose Change permissions to confirm calendar access with Google or Microsoft.

Calendars cannot be listed

SYNCDATE can use events in calendars it already knows but can't retrieve your calendar list. Choose Read calendars in Change permissions.

Read-only calendar access

You can copy events from this account but not receive copies. To receive copies, choose Change permissions, then select Edit calendar events. See what SYNCDATE decides on its own.

Errors after you try to connect

These appear as a notice after you return from Google or Microsoft.

Connection cancelled

You declined the permission request. Try again whenever you're ready.

Account limit reached

You're already at your plan's account limit. Disconnect an account first, or upgrade to connect more. See plan-limit messages.

Already connected

That account is already connected to a different SYNCDATE user. Sign in as that user, or disconnect it there first. An account belongs to one SYNCDATE login. See what SYNCDATE can't do.

Microsoft work account blocked

Your Microsoft work or school admin hasn't allowed SYNCDATE for your organization. Ask your admin to approve it, or use a personal Outlook.com account instead. See my workspace admin blocked SYNCDATE.

Organization restriction

Your Microsoft organization restricts third-party app access. Contact your IT admin to allow SYNCDATE, or use a personal account. Same guide as above.

Sign-in needed

Microsoft asked for an extra sign-in. Try connecting again. You may need to enter your password or approve a prompt.

Different Microsoft account selected

You picked another Outlook account while reconnecting. Choose the same Outlook account you started with. No new account was added.

Session expired

Your sign-in session expired before the connection finished. Try connecting again. In Safari an extra note appears with advice.

Session mismatch

You signed in with a different account than the one you started with. Connect again with the same logged-in user. The Safari note can appear here too.

Connection interrupted

The page redirected unexpectedly. Try again from the dashboard.

Couldn't keep access

Google or Microsoft didn't give SYNCDATE a refresh token, so it couldn't keep your calendar in sync. Try again, and grant offline access if prompted.

Provider error

Google or Microsoft returned an error SYNCDATE couldn't classify. Try again after a short wait. If it keeps failing, contact support with the time and the account you were connecting.

Couldn't finish setup

Approval came through but SYNCDATE couldn't finish setting up the account. Try again. If it keeps failing, contact support.

Couldn't read account info

The account connected but SYNCDATE couldn't read its email address. Try again or contact support.

Server error

Something broke on our side. Try again after a short wait. If it keeps happening, contact support with the time you tried.

Connection failed

"Something went wrong connecting your account. Please try again." Try again. If it repeats, contact support.

Signing in to SYNCDATE

Calendar access wasn't granted

You signed in with Google without ticking "View and edit calendars", and SYNCDATE can't do anything without it. Press Reconnect with Google and make sure the Calendar checkbox is checked before you continue, or use Use a different sign-in method.

Sign in with your original method

You already have a SYNCDATE account for this email. Sign in with the method you used when you first signed up, then add this account from your dashboard.

Sign-in failed

"Something went wrong. Please try again." Go back to sign in and try again.

iCal link errors

That doesn't look like a URL

The address should start with https:// or webcal://.

We couldn't open that link

Make sure it's public. Most calendar apps have a separate shareable or subscribe link. See what SYNCDATE can't do.

That link asks for a password

SYNCDATE can't sign in to your calendar app. You need the public subscribe link, not the website address.

That calendar host blocks automated requests

Look for a separate subscribe, feed or iCal address in your calendar app.

That URL didn't return a calendar file

Most apps have a separate iCal or .ics export link. Use that one.

That calendar file is too large to import

Try a different link or a smaller calendar.

Google Calendar and Outlook on the web have addresses for viewing, embedding or reading mail. None of them is the calendar feed. Use the iCal link instead.

CalDAV errors

Wrong username or app password

Use an app-specific password, not your account password. See sync an iCloud calendar with Outlook.

Server not found at that URL

Check the server address and try again.

Server didn't respond

Check your connection and try again.

The server rejected this request

Double-check the server URL and username, then try again.

Rate limit or storage quota hit on the server

Wait a while and try again. This clears by itself.

This server address isn't allowed

Check the URL and try again.

Couldn't connect

Double-check the server URL (it must start with https://), username and password.
